Kimmie Weeks & Youth Action International: We are excited to host Kimmie Weeks, the youthful humanitarian since age fourteen. Faced with civil war, human suffering and death at age 9, Kimmie committed himself to creating a better world for children. Over the years, Kimmie has formed partnerships and led organizations that have provided education to thousands of students in West Africa, lobbied the disarmament of child soldiers, and provided health care and recreation supplies to children.
In 1998, the Liberian government of Charles Taylor attempted to assassinate Kimmie because of his work with child soldiers. He was forced to flee Liberia and was granted political asylum in the United States. Kimmie started a group called Youth Action International, which is working to alleviate poverty and support development in five post war African countries. Today, YAI is working to address issue of child soldiers, unemployment, AIDS, sexual exploitation of children, education, recreation and basic health care. You can find out more at http://www.youthactioninternational.org/
Kimmie Weeks received his bachelors from Amherst College (where we met him) and his Masters from the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as Executive Director of Youth Action International and also serves as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council. The Global Agenda Council convenes 15 to 30 of the most innovative and relevant minds in fields of critical importance to the world as a whole. Other members of the Global Agenda Council include Bertie Ahern - Prime Minister of Ireland and Andrew Crockett – President of JP Morgan Chase.
During our party, Kimmie will share some of his experiences surviving the Liberian war as well as an overview of the history, vision, and work of YAI.
We appeal for your donation - there is no minimum or maximum gift, or cost to attend. We hope this fundraiser will leave you enlightened, well fed, and thoroughly inspired.
